Platycodon este o planta perena nativ compact, Asia de Est, unde crește în câmpiile montane, ca smoc cu thornless tulpini cu frunze dințate, în formă de lance, ovale, destul de albastru verde, cu o lungime de 3 până la 5 cm.

Vara, bobocii mari apar ca bilele: sunt mugurii de flori. Flori 3 până la 5 cm în diametru, clopote înguste apar la capetele de tulpini: ele purta violet albastru 5 petale ascuțite cu vene mai întunecate.
